The campuses of the University of California (UC) system served as a hotbed of performance art, partly by providing space for artists visiting from other schools and campuses. Barbara T. Smith, who had earned her MFA at UC Irvine, was invited to perform at the art gallery at the UC San Diego, one of the newer and more radical UC campuses. The Visual Arts department at San Diego also attracted artists such as Eleanor Antin, Martha Rosler, Newton and Helen Harrison, and Allan Kaprow.

Shown here are the typescript for the performance (5 x 8 in) and a photograph documenting the event by Elizabeth Sowers (7 15/16 x 10 in.) The Getty Research Institute, Gift of Art in the Public Interest and 18th Street Arts Center, 2006.M.8.44
