The materials and techniques of Billy Al Bengston’s paintings of the 1960s were those used to custom-detail the gas tanks of the motorcycles he raced at a semiprofessional level (in fact, at the time his last exhibition at the Ferus Gallery opened in 1963, it was through racing rather than art that Bengston supported himself financially). In his use of spray lacquer to produce opalescent surface color, Bengston created works that speak to the specificity of Los Angeles’s automotive and custom-car culture.
