Llyn Foulkes (born 1934) was raised in Yakima, Washington and was involved with art and music at a young age. After a formative period traveling through Europe in the U.S. Army, Foulkes returned to the West Coast in 1957 to study at Chouinard Art Institute. He received important, early solo exhibitions at the Ferus Gallery in 1961 and at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1962, which acknowledged the significance of his complex painting-constructions. These works involved both painterly and assemblage techniques and were infused with a visceral, dark quality that speaks to their politically charged messages.
