One of Chris Burden’s most infamous pieces, Shoot, in which the artist had himself shot in the arm, was performed while Burden was still a MFA student at the University of California, Irvine. To give themselves the freedom to experiment as they wished, the members of Burden’s cohort at Irvine—Barbara T. Smith and Nancy Buchanan among them—converted an off-campus warehouse into a site to host performances and exhibitions by the students and their friends and acquaintances.
