Announcement, Jack Goldstein at Mizuno Gallery

Best known today for the cool paintings and films from later in his career that comment on media culture, the performance and film screenings that Jack Goldstein prepared for Mizuno Gallery found the artist engaging in simple yet disturbing acts. Of the live performance, Riko Mizuno remembers Goldstein in a coffin. Though Goldstein had already been working with similar ideas, the choice to perform it at Mizuno Gallery only a week after Chris Burden’s Dead Man seems like a sly dig. The still featured in the announcement, meanwhile, relates to his 1971 film A Nail, in which the artist hammers in the titular nail, and then pries it loose with his teeth.
