On View at the Getty Center: Greetings from L.A.: Artists and Publics 1950-1980
This black and white invitation for a “grup shrow” features a list of seemingly strangely-named artists. They were in fact fairly well-known L.A. artists (such as Chuck Arnoldi, Laddy Dill, and Vija Celmins), only “translated” by a Japanese accent. Riko Mizuno, the owner of the Mizuno Gallery, had moved to Los Angeles from Japan in the 1950s as a young art student, and to this day retains her accent. The humor of the card lies not only in the visual transposition of the accents into various fonts, but also in the fact that Dave Bungay’s name was not transformed.
