Though he is best known for his extensive career in film, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an active participant in the Los Angeles art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. A close friend of the stable of Ferus Gallery artists, Hopper made paintings, photographs, and assemblages of his own. These works often referenced urban life, commercial imagery, and celebrity, and they contributed to the American Pop style that developed in the early 1960s.
