I was Minor White’s lab assistant at M.I.T. from 1969 to 1971. I signed out cameras, mopped floors, mixed chemicals, set up studio lights, bought supplies, did the books, cleaned glass, and helped install exhibitions. I loved it all. Work began at 9 o’clock. I arrived at 4 am—five hours of private time for printing. On weekends I slept in, not starting until 5 in the morning. In 1972 I was promoted to instructor, teaching beginning and advanced courses as Minor’s colleague until 1974.
I earned my M.F.A. at RISD with Harry Callanan and Aaron Siskind. In 1975 I was appointed assistant professor at the University of Delaware, and in 2004 I began leading photo safaris to East Africa. My next photo tours are to Cuba (November 2014) and to Kenya, for the eighth time, in September 2015.
