Martha Rosler was born in Brooklyn in 1943 and received her BA from Brooklyn College in 1965 before entering the MFA program at the University of California, San Diego. Much of Rosler’s work concerns social issues concerning sites as various as the kitchen, the television set, the streets, and transport systems. Rosler began creating video work while living in San Diego, and among her most well-known pieces is the pioneering Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975).
