Floating above the Mayan-inspired architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, the face of the artist’s sister, Gertrude, establishes the meditative quality of this image, which is further enhanced by its dense, dark printing. Teske resided in one of the studio buildings at Hollyhock House during the first five years after his move to Los Angeles in 1943 and exhibited his work there some 30 years later when the residence became a municipal art gallery.
