When Patti Smith met Robert Mapplethorpe in the epochal days of New York City in the late 1960s, they formed a deep friendship that permeated their art and community. Their bond brought about years of creation and collaboration, and developed into a story that Smith would later record in her memoir, Just Kids. In this episode, Smith talks about her recent book, M Train, the meaning behind the letter “M,” the significance of the date March 9th, and finding beauty in mistakes and improvisation.
